Indoor Environment Center (IEC)

The Indoor Environment Center (IEC) conducts interdisciplinary research, knowledge transfer and outreach activities to support the development of indoor environments that are more safe, more thermally, visually and acoustically comfortable, and that minimize the use of energy and other resources. The IEC is housed in the Department of Architectural Engineering, but affiliated faculty and staff come from a variety of Penn State campuses, colleges and departments.  IEC labs have state-of-the art facilities available to the PHRC for comprehensive laboratory and field indoor air quality investigations focusing on particulates, biological contaminants, allergens, and gas contaminants using specialized air and substrate sampling techniques, particle detectors, assay methods and gas analyzers.  Specialized facilities are also available for evaluations of building and HVAC system energy efficiency.
