Description

Learn about various possibilities for offsite residential construction focusing on single-family applications. The options range from panelized walls to component cassettes that include exterior walls with the cladding and insulation already installed to fully modular units and manufactured homes. This session will consider the opportunities and challenges that may influence the decision to pursue offsite or site-built construction. Participants will leave with an understanding that offsite construction is not a one size fits all approach.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the differences in factory-built housing including manufactured housing built to federal HUD Code and modular housing for one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses built to the International Residential Code or state and local codes.
  2. Discuss the opportunities for the residential construction industry and consumers to save money due to factors such as controlled factory settings, material efficiencies, and time savings.
  3. Recognize the challenges like zoning, building codes, shipping, and public perception which may limit what can be built and the potential consumers for offsite construction homes.
  4. Highlight the contributions offsite construction can make to address affordability, climate resiliency, skilled labor shortages, and variable site conditions in comparison to site-built housing.
