Description

Window replacement is one of the most common residential remodeling projects and plays a critical role in improving building performance, occupant safety, and energy efficiency. This webinar examines the requirements of the 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) as they apply to window replacement in existing homes, with a focus on Pennsylvania's residential remodeling market. Participants will gain an understanding of applicable code provisions, exemptions, safety glazing and emergency escape requirements, energy performance considerations, and installation best practices. Through discussion of common field conditions and renovation challenges, attendees will learn practical strategies for achieving code compliance while enhancing durability, weather resistance, and overall home performance in residential remodeling projects.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the applicable provisions of the 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) governing window replacement in existing residential structures, including common exemptions and compliance requirements.
  2. Evaluate window replacement projects for compliance with life-safety provisions related to emergency escape and rescue openings, safety glazing, and alterations to existing openings.
  3. Assess the impact of window selection and installation practices on energy efficiency, weather resistance, and overall building performance in residential remodeling projects.
  4. Apply industry best practices for window replacement in existing homes to improve durability, reduce air and water infiltration, and achieve code-compliant remodeling outcomes.
