Description

As energy efficiency expectations continue to rise, achieving higher R-values has become an important component of designing and constructing high-performance residential buildings. This webinar explores practical insulation strategies for both new construction and renovation projects in Pennsylvania, with a focus on improving thermal performance, reducing energy consumption, and enhancing occupant comfort. Participants will examine the relationship between insulation, air sealing, and thermal bridging, while reviewing the advantages and limitations of commonly used insulation materials and assembly designs. The session will also highlight effective approaches for upgrading older homes, incorporating continuous insulation, and optimizing building enclosure performance in a cost-effective manner. Through real-world applications and building science principles, attendees will gain a better understanding of how to achieve higher-performing, durable, and energy-efficient residential buildings that meet the demands of today's homeowners and energy codes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the factors that influence thermal performance in residential buildings, including insulation levels, air sealing, and thermal bridging, and explain their impact on energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and building durability.
  2. Evaluate common insulation materials and assembly options used in residential construction and renovation projects, comparing their thermal performance, application methods, and suitability for Pennsylvania's climate conditions.
  3. Apply practical strategies for increasing effective R-values in new and existing homes through the use of advanced framing techniques, continuous insulation, air sealing measures, and high-performance building enclosure design.
  4. Assess cost-effective approaches for improving the thermal performance of residential buildings while meeting energy code requirements and supporting long-term building durability and occupant comfort.
