Conference session

Tuesday Schedule

The first day of the conference, Tuesday, March 2, will focus on topics related to indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and codes & construction. Continuing education available.

Keynote

You won't want to miss the opening keynote! Hear from Eva King on "FA Breath of Fresh Air: Building Health from the Ground Up."

Not all horror stories happen in haunted houses—some unfold in perfectly ordinary homes with perfectly preventable indoor environmental quality (IEQ) disasters. For some people with underlying medical conditions, even supposedly minor building issues can create major threats to health and livelihood.

This presentation uses real-world case studies from our work in the South-East and Mid-Atlantic regions helping families with underlying medical conditions, to show how building design and poor IEQ can lead to very real health consequences. The most common problems we encounter in our work are related to moisture management, HVAC system components, building design, construction defects, ventilation, building pressurization, off-gassing, and combustion appliances, as well as various creative “operator errors.”

We’ll explore the science behind the air we breathe, how buildings can go from safe to sick, and why health should be a central consideration in every step of a building’s life-cycle—from initial design to ongoing operation.

King is the founder and principal scientist at AURA EnviroScience in Virgina. She has been involved in investigations and research into indoor environments and health, allergens, and immunology for about 20 years. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed scientific publications, and she regularly presents at conferences and workshops. Eva and her team help clients with underlying medical conditions identify building-related problems that contribute to their illness, often by direct physician referral. She received her Master in Biochemistry in her native Germany, and her Doctorate in Immunology/Epidemiology from the University of Oxford, UK, and is a Council-certified Indoor Environmental Consultant. Eva is a member of ASHRAE, the American Industrial Hygiene Association, American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, and previously served on the Board of Directors and as Technical Conference Chair of the Indoor Air Quality Association. When she’s not battling rats and snakes in crawlspaces, Eva enjoys her backyard farm with pigs, goats and chickens, and plays old-time music with friends.
